The earthquake occurred at 12:04 p.m. about 4 miles north-northeast of Kaena Point and 4.2 miles south-southwest of Puu Oo Crater, scientists said. It had a registered depth of 4.2 miles.
A magnitude-2.9 earthquake was also recorded Monday near Kahoolawe, the USGS said. The earthquake was recorded at 3:18 p.m.
No advisory was issued by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center for either earthquake.
